INTRODUCTION:

Paolo began his career in the early 90s. The Hammond organ is the instrument by which he is most closely associated, thanks to his aggressive and distinguished style with ties to the masters of the past and a true, original, personal view of the future. Paolo is recognized internationally as one of the most important and influential players of this legendary instrument.

He’s the organ player and songwriter of The Link Quartet since 1997 and his style has contributed to the worldwide success of the band, both live and on studio recordings. During the years he’s grown a reputation as an eclectic session man, playing on more than 300 albums covering almost every musical style. He was a central member and songwriter for Wicked Minds (2000-2013) and has joined Black Widow, Ray Daytona & Googoobombos, Mastica, Modulo 5, Low Fidelity Jet-Set Orchestra, Fred Leslie’s Missing Link, and many others.

In his solo career Paolo explored another side of his music, constantly enlarging and expanding his personal musical horizon, digging into jazz, fusion and funk while developing an expert technique on the electric piano and synthesizers. His love for vintage keyboards and mosaic arrangement, together with a taste for fresh style, brought him to collaborate and endorse some famous brands like Waldorf, Studiologic and Arturia.

The Link Quartet:

The Link Quartet were formed in 1991 by Renzo Bassi (bass), Mauarizio Girgenti (hammond), Giulio “Link” Cardini (guitar), and Chuck Bergonzi (drums). Joined by Tony “Face” Bacciocchi (percussion) in 1993, The Link Quartet would spend several years building their reputation as a leading force in the Italian club scene playing their special blend of 6T’s Hammond-fueled beat music.
In 1998, the band, with a growing lineup that featured a horn section, would finally record their self-titled debut single for Spain’s Animal Records. Featuring 3 original songs, including the self-important “Link Theme”, which after 7 years was certainly deserved! This in combination with a tour with UK’s leading Hammond powerhouse The James Taylor Quartet, left The Link Quartet prime for golden opportunities.
A 2nd single for Animal, “Sgnapp”, followed in 1999, and sported a new and improved Hammond prodigy in the form Paolo “Apollo” Negri. More changes would occur leading up to the first Link Quartet album, with guitarist Cardini and drummer Bergonzi’s spots being filled by Fausto Mazza and Vittorio Solinas respectively, and the horn section gone, the band were back down to 5. Simply titled “Episode 1”, and including a somewhat loungier interpretation of the funk sound, the record solidly demonstrated the bands ability to grasp and make their own the spy flavoured tunes by the likes of Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin. “Episode 1” was released in 2001 as a limited run of 200 copies, which managed to find their way around the world via direct Internet sales, but alas they still had not broken out to find international fame.
In 2002, Animal Records reissued “Episode 1”, which gave the band a better shot at global exposure, but also misrepresented the direction the band was beginning to move. Cardini returned to guitar duties, and Bacciocchi took over the drummer stool. The band settled back to their 6T’s roots, and traded in much of that lounge signature back to the funkier Hammond beat scene. And, they were at last a quartet once again, with the syncronicity and purpose necessary to make a great record.
Along with the sound, The Link Quartet began to retool their image as well. With an eye on the United States, the band were determined to make an album that would demonstrate that they could carry the raw live energy from their shows into the studio. This was accomplished by writing more original material, and applying that creativity in a more aggressive way to both how they arranged cover songs, but even in how they were selected. They worked tirelessly with their new label producer, Hammondbeat, and their audiences in refining the material before commiting to it fully. This interaction with the audience was essential in defining what material was best suited to making this new record great.
At the end of 2002 The Link Quartet released the album that took a decade to come to be. Many who had enjoyed “Episode 1”, but did not consider it to be a record of greatness, were skeptical that The Link Quartet could evolve as a leader of the beat scene beyond their Italian borders. “Beat. It” proved to indeed be a record of greatness and was well received by all that heard it and are passionate about the genre.
In 2003, filmmaker Jeffrey Bunzendahl was introduced to the band, and was “blown away” by their powerful sound. He later incorporated 5 songs from Beat.It into his spy film “Wilson Chance”, and authorized a companion CD to be produced entitled “Wilson Chance: The Sound Of Danger”, which was released in February 2004 (Hammondbeat Records) and preceded by “The Sound Of Danger Tour”, The Link Quartet’s first live appearances ever in the United States.
The Link Quartet returned to the United States for a tour in June 2004, which included dates on the West Coast and headlining the MODchicago weekender. They completed their 3rd studio album entitled “Italian Playboys” which was released in November ’04 to much critical praise, and much touring in Europe through late summer ’05.
In 2006 The Link Quartet took a break to establish their new direction. Founding member and drummer Tony Face left the band to focus on things closer to home and the band found a new drummer, Nicola Bernardoni, well known in the Italian jazz scene. Hammondbeat Records took this opportunity to release “Evolution” taking the listener back through LQ’s formation years (1997-2001) on record, from their first EP through the debut album “Episode 1”, including everything before their breakout album “Beat.It”. Also, though 2005 was quiet, LQ did record several new songs for the european compilation market which was compiled onto a companion EP entitled “Decade” as a tribute to LQ first 10 years on record.
2006 and 2007 sees the release of two albums exclusively for the japanese market by P-Vine Records: “Keep it Moving! Gran Turismo Soul Hits” (first “best of” the band) and “Long Live the Link” (first official live album), as well as Paolo’s solo debut for Hammondbeat: “A Bigger Tomorrow”. Between solo records Paolo and Hammondbeat started getting the LQ itch again and along with Renzo rebuilt the band with new guys Marco Murtas and Alberto Maffi on guitar and drums respectively. After many months of touring to develop their raport, a raw “funky for days” 45 “Fast Girls & Sexy Cars b/w Drummore” was cut to set a path for the 4th studio album simply titled “4” (2011).
“4” was a more complex production, benefiting from Paolo’s expanded writing and producer skills as well as his broad collaborative opportunites from 2 ambitious solo albums – “The Great Anything” (2010) was the 2nd – that allowed LQ to move even farther away from adapting great songs and focus on great originals that stand up on their own as “modern power-pop combined with R&B rock sensibility” – though their super funk adaptation of the Beatles’ Day Tripper shall not go unnoticed!
After Paolo completed his trilogy with “COBOL” (2011), a number of side-projects, extensive touring (including the band appearence at Sziget Festival in Budapest and opening acts for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley), a year-long collaboration between LQ and Miss Modus (aka Sarah Kennedy from the Scot’ band Modus) began. “Hotel Constellation” (2014) was recorded during a series of live Sarah-goes-to-Italy meet-ups manifesting into a full blown new space musical “when Earth has died and science has failed, one girl’s adventure for love begins!”
Then in 2016 The Link Quartet created “Quattro Pezzi Facili” EP, released by Area Pirata Records, with Silvia Molinari, an experienced singer with an incredible emotional charge. In search of the perfect balance between a signature instrumental energy and the intrinsic talent of Molinari, the group was inspired to reinvent foreign songs in Italian. The discovery of unreleased 60s scores allowed the group to explore and play with the sounds of that era but with an ear free to create something without precedent. Paolo Apollo Negri, Renzo Bassi, and Alberto Maffi created modern arrangements while Marco Murtas and Molinari interpreted the lyrics. The results are the imagings of Love Buzz (Shocking Blue), I’m A Woman (Shocking Blue), and Back Up Against The Wall (Blood Sweat And Tears). Completing the collection is a reinvention of the Ombretta Colli 1969 take of Harley Davidson (Serge Gainsbourg). The EP is followed by a promotional tour that sees the band on the road once again. While touring they found the inspiration for a new album, a “back to the roots” instrumental record set released in spring 2017 by the german label Soundflat. The album, called “Minimal Animal”, sets the band back to its original attitude with 13 original instrumental tracks filled with screaming Hammond, wah wah guuitar and wild drums line.
2017 also sees the release of the whole Link Quartet catalogue by Tanzan Music, with special deluxe editions, to celebrate the 20 years of collaborations between Paolo and the band.
2018 opens with a line-up change with Andrea Corti to come in as a new drummer. The Link Quartet spends almost the whole year touring around Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and Germany, working on new songs and building a new strong and dynamic collective sound. In doing this the band grew the idea of releasing a live album recorded in the studio during a three-days event. The event took place in November 2018 at Tanzan Music Studio and resulted in a new live studio album, containing all the best tracks of the Italian combo performed live and recorded as never before. All the energy of the quartet have been transferred on album for the first time and for sure it will give the listener a new and unique perspective of the band’s attitude. The digital version of the album, together with some live videos shot during the sessions, have been released on June 2019 by Tanzan Music while the LP version have been published in May by Spinout Nuggets on a limited and numbered run of 300 copies.
The Link Quartet, during the troubled 2020, have been working and recording a new single that brings the band back to its sixties roots, this time with a more modern and cinematic perspective. Imagine one of André Héléna stories, set in Côte d’Azur, with a spectacular robbery, car chasings and bullets flying all over your head: that’s the A-side “The Saint-Tropez Heist”, a wild up-tempo with a screaming Hammond organ, fuzz guitar and a heavy bass line, featuring, as guest, the incredible bongos of mister “Big Boss Man” Nasser Bouzida. After the action you can follow the gang in a smoky night club where they chill out sharing the loot, drinking and watching the girls dancing: that’s “Nizza Connection”, a dark and evocative down-tempo where the hypnotic drums’ groove sets the base for the organ theme, joined by the Moog synthesizer and the Mellotron to create the right mood for a perfectly fitted B-side. The single, released on 45 by Spinout Nuggets, features the amazing artwork by “Mr. Pooley” Cyril Jean. The digital version features an exclusive bonus track called “Nizza Interception”, an alternative high-power version of the single’s B-side.
2024 sees the band back in action with a new twin-spin single. With respect to two characters in Piacenza, firstly ‘Green Puma’ gives respect to an old hi-fi technician, who works from his apartment, welcoming you with white overalls that makes him look like a technician from 60s Cape Canaveral. ‘Tropical Dandy’ refers to a cultural organizer, who is always dressed to impress! Released by Spinout Nuggets in July 2024 together with an orange vynil limited re-press of “The Saint-Tropez Heist” / “Nizza Connection”.

G.O.L.E.M.:

Two years have passed since the release of “Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism,” the debut album of G.O.L.E.M. During this intense period the band has performed live across Italy and Europe, gracing prestigious stages and sharing the spotlight with some of the best contemporary bands. Moreover, they have developed their distinct sound that blends psychedelia, hard rock, and progressive elements with increasing confidence.
With one foot firmly rooted in the early seventies’ underground and the other stepping towards the future, the band—comprising Paolo Apollo Negri (organ and synthesizers), Emil Quattrini (electric pianos and Mellotron), Marco Zammati (electric bass), Francesco Lupi (drums), and Marco Vincini (vocals)—have harnessed their experience to expand and deepen their sonic horizon without losing their essence.
The long instrumental sections, constant attention to melody, intricate arrangements, meticulous sound crafting, profound lyrics, powerful rhythms, and the plethora of vintage instruments remain the pillars of their musical vision. Each of these aspects has been taken to a higher level of care and mastery. This autumn, the group will present their new album, “Gathering Of the Legendary Elephant Monsters,” the second incarnation of the acronym G.O.L.E.M.
“Gathering Of the Legendary Elephant Monsters” is the natural evolution of G.O.L.E.M.‘s musical vision: to modernize the tradition of a glorious past and create an imaginative sound, rich in references yet unique and unmistakable in its authorial traits. The album is based on tons of old organs, synthesizers, and electric pianos, melded into a boiling cauldron of tube amplifiers, aged woods from Ludwig and Rickenbacker, and dusty electric contraptions dreamt up by engineers on acid. Splitting their time between stage and studio, the group has spent the last two years refining their sound, shaping new ideas with the skill and awareness that only experience can bring. A long collective effort, where each member contributed fundamentally to the creative process, resulted in more complex and intricate tracks that both confirm and surpass the group’s characteristic sound, elevating it to a higher level. The richness of the writing, the sophistication of the arrangements, the originality of the sound experiments, the technical prowess of the individuals, and the depth and musicality of the lyrics are the elements that stand out when listening to the six tracks on the new album “Gathering Of the Legendary Elephant Monsters.”

Wicked Minds:

2000-03: Parallel with his activity in The Link Quartet Paolo joined Wicked Minds, a hard-prog band formed by Lucio Calegari (guitar), Enrico Garilli (bass) and Andrea Concarotti (drums) who already had released their debut “Return To Uranus” for the Italian label W-Records in 1999.  They spent the next 3 years developing their signature sound: a blend of progressive, hard rock, blues, psychedelia and a touch of classical influence. The band entered the studio for the recordings of “Crazy Technicolor Delirium Garden”, released as a limited edition LP only by W-Records. Thanks to this release the band got in contact with Black Widow Records, a highly regarded label in the progressive and hard rock world.
2004: After J.C. Cinel joined the line-up all the tracks from Garden were re-mixed with two new tracks added and released by Black Widow Records as “From The Purple Skies”. The album was reviewed as one of the best prog albums in the world, and the band was in demand for interviews with all the major magazines and webzines, and gigs throughout Europe. They toured the famous “Spirit Of 66” in Belgium with Areknames, followed by the “Belle Epoque” in Germany with Siena Root and Birth Control, then the Moonhead Festival in Hanau, and several gigs in Switzerland and Italy.
2005-07: Wicked Minds went back in the studio to work on “Witchflower”, a more mature and complex album released by Black Widow Records. Once again an acclaimed masterpiece was born and the band kicked off a new tour around Europe. They were invited to “Burg Herzberg Festival” in Germany where the band shared the stage with UFO, Wishbone Ash and Adrian Belew. The performance of Wicked Minds was one of the best of the whole festival and it was released as a live album in 2007 for the German label Inakustik.  After this gig the band played Switzerland, Austria and Italy, and the songs from the new album were released on several compilations by Monnhead, Inakustik, Masterpiece and many other European labels.  The band was also invited to take part in a progressive festival in Italy with Osanna and that meeting set the foundation for a new studio project. Their love for the Italian progressive music of the 70s started an ambitious tribute album to involve guests from the original line-ups. The band got to work but two band changes slowed the work: drummer Ricky Lovotti joined while singer J.C. Cinel left. As a quartet Wicked Minds played gigs around Europe while the studio work continued.
2008-09: Wicked Minds were invited to play at the Crescendo Festival in France with Hawkwind, a performance now legend in the history of this festival for the power and skill shown on stage!  While the studio work for the tribute album moved slowly they found time for a new album “Orange Shading Starlight”, a psychedelic jam published by W-Records, and for a mini-suite called “Blood From The Trees” written and recorded for the 4-disc concept album “Dante’s Inferno” for Finnish magazine Colossus, released by French label Musea. Paolo and Ricky also joined Lucio Calegari’s side-project Electric Swan for Bad Chili Records, and the new band was invited to play some of the best European festivals such as Burg Herzberg and a return to Crescendo Festival.
2010-12: Monica Sardella joined Wicked Minds and the tribute album “Visioni, Deliri e Illusioni” is finally completed for Black Widow Records, followed by gigs with some of their 70s heroes:  Maxophone, Osanna, Lupo Galifi (Museo Rosenbach), Garybaldi; and they take part at the Freak Valley Festival in Germany.  Electric Swan released their second album “Swirl In Gravity” (2012) for Black Widow Records and tour Europe.
2013: After 26 years Wicked Minds decided to split, having exhausted everything there was to say and wanting to avoid repeating themselves – but their friendship remains immutable. Paolo also left Electric Swan to discover new musical territories.

Solo & Side Projects:

Parallel with his activity with The Link Quartet and Wicked Minds, Paolo keeps on working on several other projects:
2000: With John Belpaese on the Main Stage of Arezzo Wave Festival opening for Max Gazzè.
2002: Begins his collaboration with Ray Daytona & Googoobombos with “Fasten Seat Belt” (Ammonia) featuring the amazing artwork by Winston Smith; the EP “One Eyed Jack” and the 45 “Lover and Liar” (66Sixties Records), and in Germany “Caballero” (Soundflat). Paolo tours with the band for their 2003 European tour. He also joins the lineup of Titty Twister Orchestra and release the album “Party On!” (Gonna Puke). The band plays lot of gigs in Italy before going to the Wild Weekend in Spain.
2005-06: Joins Mastica, a highly regarded psychedelic rock band well known in the european garage/sixties scene. The band plays at the Beat Bespoke in London and releases a 45 in Sweden called “Uomini” (Crusher Records). In 2006 the band releases the EP for Italy “Restyling” (Teen Sound). The live activity of the band is intense and after the amazing 3 hour set at Magic Festival in Tarragona (Spain) and the psychedelic happening at the New Year’s Party at Micca Club in Rome the band begins a second studio album, but the sessions are long and full of difficulties and the album never sees the light. The band split in 2007 without having expressed all of its potential.
2007: Paolo starts his solo career. The ambitious project involves all the musicians and friends met around the world in the past 10 years: New Mastersounds (UK), Leslie Overdrive (DK), Stoned Soul Picnic (UK), Speaklow (ESP), Cucumber (FR), Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (CH), Vertical (IT), The Getup (UK), Gene Drayton Unit (UK), Diplomats of Solid Sound (USA), Nick Rossi Set (USA), Phat Fred (ESP), Fast 3 (ESP) just to name a few. “A Bigger Tomorrow” is released in by Hammondbeat Records together with a limited double CD edition and is immediately acclaimed all over the world. Paolo brings the album on stage with part of The Link Quartet lineup and guest musicians.
2008: During the recording session of “A Bigger Tomorrow” Paolo started collaborating with American singer Teresa Reeves-Gilmer and they release a 45 called “Paparazzi” (Hammondbeat). The single enters the BBC charts and is broadcasted by RAI Radio 2 on Pop Corner program. Paolo also collaborates with Bryn Barklam (Mother Earth, Captain Hammond) on the release of a 45 for Hammondbeat called “Origin”.
Paolo and DJ Dave Masoch give birth to two parallel new projects called Modulo 5 and Low Fidelity Jet-Set Orchestra. Modulo 5’s first album “Soundsational Movements” is released by IRMA Records while Low Fidelity Jet-Set Orchestra releases the “Jazz Rocker” 45 on Hammondbeat. Both works are well taken by critics and listeners and the duo immediately start working on a new Jet-Set album called “Searching For A Bit Of Popularity” (Hammondbeat), followed in 2009 by a new Modulo 5 EP “Miles 2000” and LP “Studio Works” (IRMA) and the 2nd Jet-Set 45 “Danger Boogaloo” (Hammondbeat). Jet-Set’s “Touring The Digital Zoo (Library)” (IRMA) was released in 2012.
The year ends big with the international collaboration between Paolo, Dave Wilkinson (Phat Fred), Craig Kristensen and Kapper Dapper (Leslie Overdrive). This all-star band records an album in Copenhagen that features artists like Corrina Greyson, Sophia Faricy, The Sweet Divines, The Diplomettes and many others. The result is “Fat Lip” (Hammondbeat) under the hybrid name Fred Leslie’s missing Link and is continuously broadcast for 3 months by the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show (BBC6). This success allows the band to play live in England, Denmark, and be one of the headliners at the Purple Weekend in Leon (Spain).
2009: An intense year for Paolo. He joins the reunion of Black Widow, the famous English band – hero of the prog-rock scene in the early seventies – for recording their new album “Sleeping With Demons (Cargo Records). In March Paolo is invited to take part at the famed South By South-West Festival (SxSW) in Austin, Texas, the most important festival for independent artists in the world. Paolo is supported by a super-band formed by members of Flyjack (one of the most interesting funk bands from Texas), Diplomats of Solid Sound and Hellfire Horns plus the guest appearances of Teresa Reeves-Gilmer and The Diplomettes. These gigs in Texas start the collaboration between Paolo and Flyjack resulting in the first EP by the band, “On The One” (Hammondbeat), featuring Tameca Jones on vocals and the legendary Jab’O Starks (former drummer for James Brown), and in Paolo’s second solo album, “The Great Anything” (Hammondbeat). This album brings Paolo’s music to the next level, modern funk and soul with raw energy and a new taste in arrangements and sound design. Enriched by the contribution of great talents (Buck McKinney, Reverend Chunky, Clive Jones, Teresa Reeves Gilmer, Lucio Calegari and many others) the album is once again acclaimed by critics and fans all over the world and played by BBC and RAI.
2010-11: New collaborations with Witches Brew (Black Widow Records), Hungryheart (Tanzan Music), Robert Owens (Conya Records), Blueville and Marco Tansini (Tanzan Music) and with Joe Husselvander, drummer from the legendary Pentagram lineup. But 2011 is most of all the year of the release of Paolo’s third solo album, “COBOL” (Hammondbeat). Featuring Miss Modus, Gizelle Smith, Teresa Reeves-Gilmer, Craig Kristensen, Buck McKinney, Brad Bradburn, Mario Percudani and the inseparable Edoardo Giovanelli and Lucio Calegari, this is considered Paolo’s best album ever! The album is a success by every measure, highlighted by six months on the top download charts on eMusic and Amazon and for three months on BBC radio programs.
2012: A new single, “Lightswitch” (Hammondbeat), written by Milo Scaglioni.
2013: A new project called An Apple A Day releases “Yes We Can” (Tanzan Music), a sequel to the Fred Leslie’s missing Link album, features artists Lee Fields, Richard Roundtree, Lyrics Born, Tyra Hammond, Abdominal and many others.
2014: Paolo records the album “Understanding” with the French super-band Gentlemen’s Agreement (published by Soundflat Records), “Hotel Constellation” with The Link Quartet and Miss Modus and he hardly works on a new solo album together with friend musicians Mario Percudani (guitar), Edoardo Giovanelli (bass) and Paolo Botteschi (drums). The new album, called “Hello World” is released by Tanzan Music at the end of the year and set a new level and dimension in Paolo’s music. Jazz-rock and fusion melted with funk and soul with guest musicians like Bob Harris (Frank Zappa Band) and Noel McKoy.
2015-16: years of intensive collaborations and Paolo is featured on several records like the new Hungryheart album “Dirty Italian Job”, Edoardo Cerea, David Stockdale, Smokey Fingers’ “Promised Land”, The Hounds Of Hasselvander, Warm Morning Brothers and many others. In 2016 The Link Quartet add a new EP to their discography. “Quattro Pezzi Facili”, together with Silvia Molinari, published by Area Pirata, is another stepping stone in the band career and an intensive tour follows this release.
2017: A new full lenght album by The Link Quartet, called “Minimal Animal” and published by Soundflat Records, is released in February, a long awaited “come back to the roots” for the italian Hammond combo, followed by an intense live activity with the new drummer Andrea Corti.
2018: while the Link Quartet kept on touring for almost the whole year, culminating in the recordings of the “Secret Sessions”, a three days show in the recording studio to celebrate their 25th year of activity, Paolo started a new project called Gravitational Objects of Light, Energy and Mysticism (G.O.L.E.M.), a brand new progressive rock band, and he started writing and arranging the songs for their debut album.
2019: Spinout Nuggets released the “Secret Sessions” and paolo kept on touring and working in the studio. He also joined the highly regarded psychedelic band Da Captain Trips and with them he started working on their new album.
2020: while all the live gigs are stopped Paolo kept on working in the studio: he recorded a new EP together with his father Antonio and Edoardo Giovanelli, a modern old school Hammond samba project that will be released by Spinout Nuggets in 2021 together with the new single by The Link Quartet. While he kept on working with Da Captain Trips, the debut album by G.O.L.E.M. was finished and it’s now waiting to see the light with the italian label Black Widow Records.
2021: this is “The LEM Tales” year, the first work produced in collaboration with the beat-maker and bass player Moonbrew. Two words, two worlds blended together to get new meanings: hip hop meets funk, pop merges with jazz, the old school aptitude enhanced by new sonic possibilities, the urban sound hurled into space. The first chapter is released on vynil by Four Flies Records.
2022: the year opens with a new release by Da Captain Trips, a psychedelic instrumental band active since 2009 and joined by Paolo in 2019. The album “Maths of the elements” is well received and the band tours around Europe for the whole year. Later on the first album by G.O.L.E.M. is released followed by several gigs around Europe. In the same year the second chapter of The LEM Tales sees the light.
2024: after an intense year of gigs Paolo is back with several new releases. A new single with Moonbrew and singer Tilde is released by Four Flies Records; G.O.L.E.M. second album, “Gathering Of the Legendary Elephant Monsters” is released by Black Widow Records. A new band sees the light: Famiglia Cobram, a jazz/funk instrumental combo releasing 5 singles for Brewing Records.
